6 Amazing Health Benefits Of Drinking Celery Juice

As a health conscious person, chances are you’ve heard about some of the wanders of celery juicing in recent times.

Celery juice is being dubbed as a 'cure-all' wonder remedy for many common ailments as well as a secret to ongoing health and wellness.

Whilst celery by itself is not considered a definitive "superfood", thanks in part to the best-selling “Medical Medium” series of books written by Anthony Williams, word has gotten out about the amazing results people have been experiencing in terms of healing chronic health issues by regularly drinking celery juice.

This is not “pie in the sky” stuff either, as you’ll see, celery, like other wholefood gifts from nature’s table, offers you a range of scientifically supported nutritional and health benefits.

The Celery Plant

Growing to heights of up to 40 centimetres, celery is a member of the Umbelliferae family of vegetables and herbs which also includes carrots, fennel, parsley and dill.

Although its stalks are most commonly known for their use in cuisine, the leaves, roots and seeds can also be used. These have been embraced traditionally in many cultures as a natural remedy thanks to their medicinal properties.

If you take a closer look at this stalky green vegetable, you’ll soon notice that the stems hold a resemblance to human bones.

Ancient cultures observed and adopted the wisdom that the "signature" or “sign-of-nature”, of celery resembles the structure and shape of the human bones.

Not only does celery 'snap' and 'look' like bones, snap it, most interestingly it contains a phytochemical composition of sodium that is approximately 21%, which is almost identical to the amount of sodium which healthy human bones are meant to store to be functional and strong!

Health Benefits Of Celery

Thanks to its vast array of bioactive flavonoids, celery is packed full of nutrients and compounds that are beneficial for health and healing.

Celery stalks, leaves and celery seeds all offer nutritional benefits, but most importantly celery contains two potent antioxidants known as apigenin and luteolin, which are known for their qualities in fighting inflammation and a host of inflammatory diseases

Celery is not only alkalising, enzyme-rich and immunity-boosting, but also jam-packed with essential vitamins and minerals, such as:

  • Folate
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Vitamins B6, C & K

As a result of all this inherent natural goodness, this incredible vegetable is beneficial for treating and healing a long list of health complaints:

6 Reasons Why Celery Juice Is All The Rage

Not just a fad, there are very good reasons why you should consider including bouts of celery juicing into your self care routine periodically, for example 2-3 days per week. Here's 7 reasons to do it:

  1. Body Alkalising Benefits – the antioxidant and vitamin content in celery juice have cancer-fighting compounds which are very alkalising to the body. Celery contains a flavonoid called Apigenin, which has been shown to thwart cancer cells. The Polyacetylenes in celery also have chemo-protective compounds that help to reduce toxicity whilst boosting immunity that can help slow mutated cell growth;
  2. Gut Health and Digestive Support – it acts as a natural diuretic. As the celery juice circulates the intestines, the hydrochloric acid content helps break down and transport food particles faster and more efficiently through the intestinal tract. Also, when stomach acidity is too low, the body draws on other resources to help the digestive process, compromising energy. Celery juice can significantly replenish depleted levels of gastric mucus needed in the stomach lining, to heal and prevent ulcers and acid reflux;
  3. Cholesterol Lowering - due to the nutrient compounds that have lipid-lowering effects, celery juice helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) in the bloodstream, usually caused by eating a diet that is rich in too many "bad fats" over time;
  4. Reduces blood pressure - as a natural muscle relaxant, celery juice helps lower high blood pressure by boosting the flow of calcium and potassium in cells.  This supports the blood vessels to expand and contract more easily, boosting circulation;
  5. Boost liver function - by increasing the production of enzymes, celery juice protects and reduces fat build-up in the liver by supporting the liver to produce enzymes that help flush out fat and toxins from the body;
  6. Purifies the skin - loaded with a long list of essential minerals and vitamins already highlighted, celery juice is a powerful skin purifier, known for its powers in healing skin conditions like acne and psoriasis.  Also, the Luteolin in celery protects the skin from the inside and can also prevent UV-induced damage.

Drinking and Preparing Celery Juice

While eating raw celery as a snack, in raw salads and in cooking is also recommended, by juicing it you can actually get a much more concentrated amount of nutrients into your body in one go.

Drinking celery juice by itself on an empty stomach first thing in the morning is exceptionally potent.

You can also reserve some of your celery juice as a base for "green smoothies" later in the day, but this has a different type of benefit to simply “mono-juicing” celery on its own.

It’s also vital to ensure that the celery you use for your juice has been grown organically without being tainted by pesticides and herbicides. Unfortunately, due to its stalky nature, celery regularly gets ranked as one of the "dirty dozen" vegetables and fruits that contain the highest presence and concentration of toxic chemical residues from commercial cultivation methods.

Source your celery from the local farmer's markets whenever you can.  And on occasions when you can't access organic or spray-free celery, be sure to rinse it well in a water and apple cider vinegar solution (add one cup of ACV to 3-4 litres of water) before you refrigerate or juice your celery.

How To Prepare

One of the best and easiest ways to make celery juice is by using a “cold-pressed juicer”.

These types of juicers are designed to be slow and gentle when they grind vegetables and fruit and extract a “living juice” with most of the health-promoting enzymes, vitamins and minerals still intact.

A great model which we use and recommend is the Kuvings Elite C7000 Cold Pressed Professional Juicer.  If not use any brand of cold-press juicer or the best quality centrifugal juicer you can find!

Method

  1. Select a fresh and crisp bunch of celery as this will contain the highest concentration of enzymes, vitamins and minerals
  2. Rinse well under cold water as dirt tends to get embedded into stalks and leaves
  3. Keep the leaves on but chop off the roots
  4. Feed stalks and leaves into a cold pressed juicer, or chop up into smaller pieces first if using a standard juicer or blender
  5. Drink on an empty stomach and enjoy!

Although freshly pressed or juiced is always preferable, if you are time-poor, provided your juice is cold-pressed, you can prepare it in bulk “batches” and store refrigerated in airtight glass bottles or mason jars for up to 72 hours and it's nutrients will remain intact.
