Natural Remedies for Thyroid Health
Even though your thyroid weighs less than an ounce, it has a big impact on your health because it stimulates hormonal function that regulates your metabolism - from your heart rate, to how quickly you burn food as fuel.
If your thyroid is 'over' or 'under' active, it means that there is a hormonal imbalance, which can lead to chaos in the body, showing up as symptoms of rapid weight gain, weight loss, fatigue, sluggish metabolism, irregular heartbeat and mood swings or irritability.
Hypo Thyroidism is one of the most misdiagnosed diseases out there, with women over the age of 40 the main target market for the sale of toxic, 'lifetime' drugs like "Thyroxine".
To perform at it's highest functional capacity, the thyroid thrives on a naturally occurring nutritional component called, Iodine. And even though the thyroid in particular requires iodine to perform, virtually every body system counts on this nutrient to keep us alive and energised.
The problem is that most adults don't eat enough iodine-rich foods, which of course leads to an iodine deficiency and a range of bad health problems, but the most common issue that shows up is Thyroid disorders.
Iodine is obtained from foods like sea kelp and certain green vegetables, but it's a little known fact that one of the highest concentrations of phytalitic (plant) iodine comes from a food that shares the same signature (sign-of-nature) pattern as the thyroid - mushrooms!
Brilliant ancient healers observed that mushrooms have the same anatomical structure as the human thyroid and therefore they believed that eating mushrooms would deliver the nutritional qualities needed for maintaining and restoring thyroid health.
They were right on the money!
The thyroid takes the food source of iodine and combines it with the amino acid, tyrosine.
The thyroid then converts the iodine/tyrosine into the hormones known as T3 and T4 - the two main hormones produced by the thyroid - before releasing them into the blood stream in order to help cells convert oxygen and calories to energy, and for the support of numerous, important bodily functions.
A healthy adult usually has about 15-20 milligrams of iodine present within their body at any one time, with about 70-80% of that stored in the thyroid. The unused iodine we source from food is excreted in the urine.
So, what causes thyroid problems?
The following factors can all impact the health of your thyroid function over time:
- The over-consumption of processed, sugary and fatty foods and drinks;
- Not enough iodine rich foods in the diet e.g. Green and sea vegetables;
- Certain supplements that claim to contain iodine but in the form of Iodide;
- A compound called Bromine which blocks iodine absorption, common in industrial-produced packaged foods and commercial flour production;
- Excessive medications which add toxicities to the body;
- Insufficient exercise.
Natural foods and remedies to heal thyroid function
To restore lost thyroid function or to get off thyroid medications, I'd firstly recommend to eat 1 cup of Mushrooms each day for at least 90 days. Consume them raw, sauteed, or in soups of salads and slowly wean yourself off your medication as you feel comfortable.
In addition, drink at least two litres of clean water each day and eat a diet rich in sea vegetables like kelp, nori, kombu and wakame, green vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts, organic soy products like tempeh, miso and tamari, raw/unpasteurized dairy and free-range, organic eggs.
Cook or prepare dressings with plenty of Garlic, Onions, unrefined Sea Salt, Coconut Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Snack on Pumpkin Seeds, Sesame Seeds and Almonds because they are a great source of Tyrosine, the amino acid that your body uses to manufacture the thyroid hormone.
Take an organic flaxseed or extra virgin oil shot each day and eat avocado's at least 2-3 times per week, as your body needs the 'good' fats to restore lost function.
Prepare and drink raw vegetable juices combining foods like Carrots, Cucumber, Celery, Parsley, Spinach, Kale, Wheat Grass and Ginger.
Finally, get outside into the sun whenever you can and walk for 30-45 minutes each day, first thing in the morning if you can.
Things to definitely avoid...
- Processed wheat, sugar, flour and artificial sweeteners;
- Stimulants such as nicotine and chemically infused caffeine;
- Soft drinks and soda;
- Foods that contain MSG (mono sodium glutamate);
- Hyrdrogenated oils e.g. margarine;
- Supplements, in particular algae supplements like spirulina;
- Refined table salt (only use unrefined, naturally harvested sea salt or himalayan);
- Pesticides by rinsing your locally sourced produce in an Apple Cider Vinegar wash before storing or preparing.
