The best foods for oral health include:

Calcium-rich foods, which promote strong teeth and bones. Try: Leafy greens, tofu and almonds.

Phosphorus rich foods, which also strengthen teeth. Try: Nuts, seeds and beans. 

Vitamin C rich foods, which help to support gum health. Try: Citrus fruits, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and spinach. 

Water: You may not always be able to brush your teeth after meals or snacking. Instead, rinse your mouth with water after eating to remove debris that could sit in between and on teeth.

Foods That Clean Teeth

An apple a day doesn’t only keep the doctor away, it can keep the dentist at bay too. Apples can actually clean teeth, while also freshening breath. 

Celery and carrots have similar cleansing benefits, with the added perk of being able to scrub away plaque.

Clean Naturally

Remember: less is more. If your toothpaste has a dozen ingredients, chances are, it’s not good for you. 

Don’t automatically trust a toothpaste or powder that says “natural” or “organic”: it can still contain fluoride or carrageenan.

Instead, educate yourself so you can read labels. It only takes a few seconds, and will work wonders to improve your overall health, and oral health.

Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Commercial Toothpastes


Suflates create the foam in toothpaste, as well as shampoo and soaps. Other than this sudsy effect, sulfates have no purpose. 

Sulfates can be irritating to skin, and especially the tissue in your mouth, resulting in tiny tears that may develop into ulcers.

Some sulfates are carcinogenic, which may cause cancer. 

Artificial flavours, colours or sweeteners

Other than making toothpaste look and smell pretty (and there are natural ways to do this), artificial flavours and colours have no purpose. They simply build up in your body and overtime, pollute your body stream.

Artificial sweeteners have a host of well-documented dangers. They’ve been linked to depression and anxiety, learning and behavioural issues, headaches, dizziness and seizures. 

Diethanolamine (a.k.a. DEA)

Like sulfates, DEA helps create the foam in toothpaste. Prolonged exposure to DEA may cause organ system toxicity, hormone imbalances and cancer. 

Remember: we don’t need foam to have clean teeth. 


Triclosan is linked to compromised cardiovascular function, cancer,  allergies and endocrine issues. Triclosan may also cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics. 

While triclosan has been banned in some parts of the world, in others, it is still found in a myriad of health and beauty products--including toothpaste. 

Titanium dioxide

Titanium dioxide, which gives toothpaste it’s brilliant white colour, has been shown to cause cancerous growths in lab studies. 


While ‘natural’, since it comes from red seaweed, carrageen (a thickening agent in toothpaste and many food products), can cause intestinal inflammation. 

Natural Ingredients to Look for in Natural Toothpaste 

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which can stop plaque build-up, help reduce bacteria in the mouth and reduce inflammation in the gums.

Activated charcoal

Activated charcoal is incredibly porous and can remove surface stains while preventing tooth decay through its ability to increase your oral pH.

Derived from xylose, birch bark sugar, xylitol cannot be metabolised by plaque bacteria. As a result it will reduce plaque build-up. It also makes the toothpaste taste sweet. 


Stevia is a sweetener that comes from a plant, and since it does not produce the lactic acid that eats away at teeth and causes decay, it is an incredibly effective non-toxic toothpaste ingredient. 

Essential Oils

Is there nothing essential oils can’t do? Essential oils are lauded for their cleansing abilities thanks to their antimicrobial properties. Natural toothpastes often contain essential oils because they have powerful antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and general cleansing properties.
