Spring Clean | Why clearing internal plaque detoxifies the skin


Although it may seem that your gut and skin are two totally separate body parts, their health are inextricably linked.

Your skin health is a direct reflection of your internal health 

And that's why conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis are almost always an indicator of toxic plaque inside your body that needs to be released before you can have vibrant, glowing skin again.

'Steroid topical' creams (like you'll get from your chemist or dermatologist) do nothing more than suppress the symptoms of unhealthy skin, creating a temporary fix and a raft of potential side-effects, whilst doing nothing to address the real cause of the problem.

Yes, there are definitely things you should be doing on the 'outside' - like avoiding lathering yourself in chemical soaps and lotions, and instead getting into the habit of gently exfoliating your skin with salts and cold pressed plant oils - but the #1 secret to clearing up problematic skin and restoring that youthful glow is detoxifying your body internally.

How can my gut health affect the condition of my skin?

Over time, excess plaque and bad bacteria can accumulate in the gut, usually due to what you eat and drink and lifestyle factors. When this happens and you don't do something to help clear it out, two problems occur:

  1. The uptake of vitamins, minerals and nutrients from food for healthy use by your cells is continuously compromised;
  2. Your digestive system falls into a state of overwhelm, not allowing it to perform it's intended function of efficiently eliminating waste. 

Once this begins to happen, your body will look for other avenues to dump toxins.

And since your skin is the largest organ of elimination that you have, absorption of 'the offence' through the skin's dermal layers causing 'breakouts' is a completely logical reaction.

So if you've suffered from skin complaints for years, my first tip is that you take a good look at your diet and lifestyle and begin with a 'spring clean' before searching for a miracle band aid that's only going to postpone the problem. 

Spring cleaning to rejuvenate the skin...

Spring cleaning is an ancient wisdom that goes way back to the earliest dynasties of Egypt.

Because Winter was recognised as the season when the human body was more inclined to accumulate plaque due to the colder temperatures, a heavier diet, less water intake and less physical activity, Spring was considered the perfect time to embark on a cleansing protocol.

Most people tend to feel the effects of sluggishness, excess weight and dry, flaky blemished skin throughout the winter period, so a 'spring clean' can represent a fresh opportunity to detoxify and remove the plaque that has proliferated over the colder months to weigh you down and impact your appearance.

There are a number of ways that you can spring clean from juice fasting to going on nothing but raw plant foods for multiple days to cleanse, lift your energy and re-nourish your skin

What can help me to detoxify and cleanse?

Besides fasting, or going with raw fruits, veges or Pulse for a small period of time, there are some very specific natural clays and fibres that can assist with your detox. 

Two of the most effective are what I like to call, 'dirt simple' remedies made by mother-earth for humanities benefit:

Bentonite Clay

This ‘binding clay’ is becoming more and more known in holistic health circles these days and is the secret ingredient in my Cleanse Me 4-Day Colon Cleanse.

It has an alkalising effect on the body and when taken correctly, it can help strip waste from the colonic wall and balance the bacterial environment in the gut.

When mixed with pure water, Bentonite Clay works like a highly porous sponge in the stomach 'binding' intestinal plaque for elimination from the body.

Internal Use: Add 1 heaped teaspoon of my Food Grade Bentonite Clay to a glass of water or juice, then stir and drink. Consume within 1 hour of food for best results. From here the toxins are drawn into the sponge through electrical attraction and once there, they are bound before passing through the digestive tract.

'D.E.' aides the removal of harmful gastrointestinal parasites and toxic metals, as well as improves the health and appearance of the teeth, skin, hair, tendons, blood vessels, cartilage, joints, bones and the optimal function of every vital organ in the body.

Internal Use: Mix 1 teaspoon into a glass of water, stir vigorously and drink on an empty stomach, preferably first thing in the morning at least one hour before eating, or two hours after eating. Drink an additional glass of water immediately after you've consumed the mix and continue to stay hydrated throughout the day.

For your skin, D.E. makes it an excellent scrub and exfoliant as it penetrates the pores and effectively sweeps dirt, toxic residues and dead skin cells away, allowing your skin to detoxify and ‘breathe’ better.

Other things to keep in mind...

To detoxify and purify the skin, it's important that you avoid using commercial soaps and chemical creams, lotions and cosmetics that clog your pores.  

There are plenty of non-toxic, plant-based, skin and body care products on the market that you'll find at a good health food store or browse my online store.

It's beneficial to also get a little sunshine onto your skin each day and get into the ocean if you can, or at least bathe in nature-made salts. Always remember that salt is one of nature's greatest healers of skin problems!

Finally, do some light exercise.  If you can work up a sweat all the better, because in doing so, you'll speed up the process of toxin elimination and internal/external body cleansing.
