Natural Pain Relief: Top Remedies for Soothing Discomfort & Pain in the Body

If you suffer from any type of ongoing pain or discomfort it's usually a signal that you have 'inflammation' in your body.

Everything from Arthritis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Influenza, High Blood Pressure and Muscular-Skeletal Pain are the result of a 'body system' that is 'inflamed' or not performing at its best.

Inflammation can take on many different forms.

The pain or dis-ease you experience is known as a 'symptom', which is simply a “sign” or “signal” of “something else”.

In other words, the symptom is an indicator of a greater 'cause' that's inside the body that needs to be addressed.

The big problem is that the medical world is trained only in 'treating symptoms' with drugs - and whilst these drugs can provide temporary 'band-aid' relief, they do nothing to change the “something else” (address the cause).

It's important to realise that just because a pharmaceutical painkiller or drug gets rid of a “symptom”, it does not mean that you have been cured of the discomfort or dis-ease.

In fact, drugs that suppress or inhibit the pain ultimately will likely lead to further health problems down the road due to their toxic side effects.

Your body has an innate intelligence that is designed to defend, cleanse and heal itself from a variety of infective agents, toxic sludge, injuries and/or stresses. It's called the autogenic self-healing system.

Fever, pain, discharge, nausea and the like are simply 'red flags' that there is a problem...and your only job is to listen to your body and to support its healing with principles of Self Care so that your body can utilise its powers to respond and heal.

Thankfully, Mother Nature provides us with the tools to allow this process through an abundance of whole foods and plant oils.  In my mind, other than in cases of crises and trauma due to accidents, they're literally the ONLY 'medicines' we should ever be using.

Wholefoods and plant extracts in the form of Essential Oils, not only offer non-toxic, pain-relieving properties, they have tremendous powers for getting to the 'root cause' of the pain or dis-ease.

If you have inflammation in your body, the medical world commonly prescribes solutions likes these:

Anti-inflammatory – Widely referred to as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), these drugs block the pain messengers within the body to make you 'feel' like you've been healed.  Known side-effects from extended use include gastrointestinal problems, cardiovascular disease and strokes.

Antibiotics – Another 'masking' drug that provides short-term relief from infection, but diminishes the body's immune function, natural defences and healing capabilities.  Overuse has led to the proliferation of 'super-bugs' that are causing even more widespread use of antibiotics, when in fact, they're the cause of the problem.

Anaesthetic – Induces a temporary loss of sensation or numbing effect. Helps with reducing the intensity of pain during operations;

Antidepressant – These are 'masking' drugs that may provide the illusion of temporary relief but never address the underlying cause. These drugs are known to lead to further drug dependency and possible violence and even suicides;

Decongestant – A synthetic medicine that may provide short-term respiratory relief, but will not cure sinusitis or allergies. Side-effects include nausea, headaches, anxiety, dizziness and throat irritation.

Sedative – Provides a tranquilising effect that assists in reducing irritability and discomfort from aches and pains in the short-term.

A diet rich in "anti-inflammatory" foods like these is essential to support your immune system and the autogenic, self-healing system:

  1. Cold Pressed Plant Oils - Extra Virgin Olive, Cold Pressed Coconut, Avocado, Flax and Walnuts provide omegas and vital 'pain-relieving' nourishment to all body systems;
  2. Leafy Greens - The white veins in vegetables like Chard share the signature pattern of the white blood channels that make up lymphatic (immune system) stream;
  3. Celery - Rich in sodium and potassium, celery reduces blood pressure and strengthens the bones (it's no coincidence that celery looks just like the bones!);
  4. Beets - Purifies and increases the viscosity of the blood;
  5. Cherries - very effective for relieving pain in the body, cherries have long been used as a folk remedy for gout, and now they carry the clout of scientific evidence. Twenty tart cherries were tested and the conclusion was: they were as effective as other pain-killing remedies, including aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAID drugs - in fact actually much better and they carried no toxic side effects. For pain relief, try eating a bowl full of cherries. If you don’t feel up to eating a whole bowl of cherries, you can get the same benefit from much fewer dried ones. When it comes to pain relief, one dried cherry equals about eight fresh ones;
  6. Blueberries - powerful natural anti-oxidant and immune-boosting food;
  7. Garlic, Turmeric, Ginger and Chilli Peppers - Nature's anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory spices that are a must in your diet

Pure Essential Oils

Ancient cultures considered plant extract oils sacred because of their natural, powerful healing qualities.

Pure Plant Essential oils can be used to help relieve and heal a wide range of symptoms and pain in the body from muscular-skeletal problems to respiratory ailments.

Not only do essential oils 'soothe', they 'talk' to the body, meaning they get to the 'site' or root cause of the problem and do their magic.

For example, if you use Peppermint Essential Oil on aching muscles, not only does it relieve the pain but also helps to improve blood circulation to the affected area, which in turn serves to reduce inflammation which is a common cause of pain in the body.

Similarly, Lavender Essential Oil often used as a remedy to relieve headaches and neck pain can also assist in reducing stress and anxiety which are associated in many cases to being a contributor to the root cause.

Helichrysum Oil

One of the most incredible pain relief discoveries of the ancient world was the plant called "Helichrysum". The name is derived from the Greek words Helio (sun) and Chrysos (gold). This amazing plant is a natural pain reliever like no other and it works by healing the nerves that are in distress and causing the pain. You can massage Helichrysum Pure Essential Oil onto the skin around the area where pain problems exist.

Peppermint Oil

As touched on above, Peppermint Pure Essential Oil is not only beneficial for muscular pain relief, but also effective against some types of stomach aches, headaches as well as relief from colds, flu, sinusitis, allergies, asthma and bronchitis thanks to its expectorant qualities perfect for unblocking the sinuses when inhaled or used as an ingredient for a natural nasal or throat spray. This makes it a must-have for any at-home medicine cabinet! It can also help to reduce fever when mixed with coconut oil and rubbed on the neck and bottom of the feet. For skin conditions, it soothes irritation associated with rashes and itching as a result of bites and stings when mixed with Lavender Pure Essential Oil and applied to the affected areas.

Lavender Oil

One of the most versatile plant oils, alongside Peppermint, Lavender Pure Essential Oil doesn’t disappoint in terms of its range of pain relieving uses either! When inhaled or diffused it’s considered as one of the top natural remedies for migraines and tension headaches brought on by stress, as a result of its strong sedative properties. Additionally, it’s also anti-inflammatory making it ideal for pain associated with skin irritations and muscle aches, just mix a few drops to a carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil and massage into the skin.

Clove Oil

Along with its incredible anti-bacterial and anti-microbial constituents, especially powerful for dental hygiene and throat infections, Clove Pure Essential Oil, thanks to its aesthetic properties is also effective for relieving the pain associated with toothaches. Put some on a cotton swab and rub it around the sore area, or mix with some coconut oil and swirl around in your mouth.

Eucalyptus Oil

When applied topically to the skin Eucalyptus Pure Essential Oil is beneficial in reducing muscle aches and pains thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties that serve to reduce swelling and soreness. Recent studies have shown that inhaling it can also assist with general complementary pain relief as well as alleviating sinus pressure associated with many people’s headaches.

Wintergreen Oil

With a strong distinctive scent that’s both uplifting and stimulating, this powerful plant oil is also gifted with powerful pain-relieving qualities. However, due to its potency and purity, Wintergreen Pure Essential Oil can only be used externally and should be mixed with a carrier oil. It’s perfect for treating pain from arthritis, and muscular and skeletal pain from injuries and neuralgia.

Golden Re-Leaf Pain Relief Oil

My Golden Re-leaf Muscle & Joint Pain Relief Oil is a sacred blend of the best properties from most of the pure plant essential oils mentioned above, plus extracts from seeds, flowers and an infusion of 24K medicinal gold with inherent anti-inflammatory and circulation-promoting qualities. This unique and powerful combination is ideal for soothing and relieving not only joint and muscle aches and pains, but also for reducing lymphatic inflammation and alleviating numerous other pain-causing conditions.

Baths & Massage

The father of Western medicine, Hippocrates, believed that “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and massage every day.” The 3,000-year-old traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) regarded aromatic massage and baths as an important component of its healing.

Soaking in a nice hot bath of Epsom Salts not only soothes the body and relaxes the muscles, but also reduces tension, pain and inflammation in joints thanks to its high concentration of magnesium which gets absorbed through the skin and promotes the production of serotonin while reducing the effects of the stress hormone, adrenaline.

Massage helps muscles relax and relieve tension and pain by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles. Muscle aches from overuse and fibromyalgia often respond well to this form of treatment. When done with an application of Helichrysum Pure Essential Oil or my Golden Re-Leaf it can work wonders.

Plant-derived aromatic massage oils and salves were used by the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Arabic and Chinese for enhancing mental, emotional and physical health.

Even though a massage is relaxing and helps increase circulation and eliminates impurities, combining with deep massage the relaxing aromatic properties of essential oils, may also influence your physical health and emotional outlook. This relaxing and healing form of massage is known as “aromassage” or “aromatouch”.

Healing Chrysm Pain Relief Balm

Packed with organic essential oils and a high concentration of Helichrysum Essential Oil, my handcrafted Healing Chrysm Balm is an effective natural pain reliever that works by penetrating and soothing the nerves that are in distress when regularly massaged into the affected areas. Also containing Almond and Shea butters as well as Aloe Vera, “Nature’s Potted Physician”, muscular aches, bruises, joint pain and minor burns, cuts respond well to the topical application of this soothing healing balm.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a therapy that works on the principle that there are reflexes on the feet and hands that correspond to all glands, organs and other parts of the body. The touch and pressure receptors of the nervous system transfer the sensation to the receptive areas of the body by stimulating these reflexes with the thumb and forefingers.

This can not only help to alleviate pain in those areas, but also activate the body’s own natural healing system by improving the nerve and blood supply and helping nature to normalise the various functions of the body.

As with other forms of massage, its beneficial effects can be enhanced with the application of pure essential oils or my Pain Relief Oil or Balm.
