Elevating Your Emotional Wellbeing


In today’s fast-paced world, millions of folks fall into a slump because they feel they can’t keep up, that there’s no compelling future, or they lose a sense of their own self worth.

Our thoughts create our emotions and our emotions guide our behaviours.

That’s why I was thrilled to be featured in the documentary called e-motion a year or so back.

Even people who seem outwardly successful and who look to ‘have it all’ can have quiet demons going on inside.

The problem is that sitting around and dwelling on all that’s bad in your life is a negative thought pattern that will cause you to feel drained and down emotionally. And in that state, chances are nothing positive will come.

The key is to break that vicious cycle. So how do you do that?

Well, here’s a few simple tips that might help…

  1. Be responsible - Realise that life is a journey, made up of experiences - some of which you can and can’t control. The key is to take responsibility for all the things that you CAN control and not dwell on those you can’t;
  2. Find gratitude and smell the roses - Identify even the simplest of things that are good in your life and practice being grateful for those. Never compare yourself to anyone else – there will always be someone better and worse off than you;
  3. Be in control of your sadness – Understand that the down feelings are temporary and don’t allow yourself to get sadder just because you’re sad;
  4. Do something active – Moping around the house feeling sorry for yourself will only make it worse. Walk along the beach with sand between your toes, ride a bike, or take a hike with a friend. You’ll find that this will change your state completely;
  5. Focus on the future – whatever has caused you to feel depressed or sad, have the mindset that ‘the only way is up’. Focus on all the good you have and know that this can help you move forward to brighter things;
  6. Spend time with positive people – Find a circle of people who inspire you and brighten you up rather than hold you back or drag you down;
  7. Avoid Toxic Meds – avoid or wean yourself off anti-depressant drugs which can actually contribute to negative emotions.

When it comes to foods, what you eat can either lift or sink your mood and your emotional wellbeing. These are the ones I recommend most:

  • Whole grains and unprocessed, unrefined carbohydrates - they increase concentrations of the amino acid tryptophan in the brain, which is then converted in the body to mood-boosting serotonin;
  • Green leafy vegetables can also boost your serotonin levels;
  • Eat plenty of orange & yellow wholefoods, like pineapple, bananas, cantaloupe, oranges, lemons, corn, mangoes and Tropical Pulse;
  • Get Sunshine because the biophotons of light activate the part of the brain that delivers happiness and joy;
  • Walk outside - NOT on a treadmill!! Moving yourself through outside space gets the senses involved which again stimulates emotional wellbeing.  Remember, it doesn't need to be militant so you can leave your spandex at home!
  • Snack on Raw Chocolate – not the chemically infused commercial stuff! I’m taking about the organic varieties made from raw organic cacao because it has high levels of serotonin, boosting brain levels of calming hormones and the restoration of well-being.

You just need to gradually re-wire yourself with gratitude for what you have, embrace as many of these simple tips and I know you’ll turn your life around.
